Salford Primary Care Workforce Data Mapping (SWorDMap)

What are we trying to do?

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care Greater Manchester (CLAHRC GM) is working with NHS Salford CCG to:

  • Develop a data capture tool to better map current and future workforce requirements in Salford

  • Use this tool and the improved data quality it provides to inform workforce decision-making

Why is it important?

The primary care workforce in England has been undergoing rapid change. To ensure this change is appropriate and effective it is essential we understand what skills and knowledge we currently have, how it is distributed and what ‘gaps’ need to be plugged through forward planning.

The SWorDMap project will enable NHS Salford CCG and CLAHRC GM to develop a bespoke tool to more accurately capture the area’s primary care workforce data. Improved accuracy will support more effective workforce planning and ultimately support better health care delivery for Salford residents.

How will we do it?

Through interviews and focus groups we will engage with a range of people involved in the commissioning, monitoring and delivery of primary care across Salford in order to:

  • Develop a set of key workforce measures based upon what professionals consider most informative for workforce planning

  • Identify ways to improve practice engagement with the data collection/returns process

Working with NHS Salford CCG Business Intelligence Team we will:

  • Develop a tool to extract the agreed key measures in a format that is most useful for the end users

  • Pilot the tool and evaluate the usefulness of the data it produces through interviews and focus groups with end users
