Research priority setting for end of life care in Greater Manchester

What did we do?

Building on the work that the Palliative and end-of-life Priority Setting Partnership (PeolcPSP)  completed to formulate 10 national research priorities for end-of-life care, we further developed these priorities to find out which are of key interest within Greater Manchester.

This ensures that we have a top three to four priority areas for end-of-life research that we and other organisations can work on in the near future. The main output of this work is a report on priority areas for end-of-life research in Greater Manchester that the whole locality can share.

This project also developed research networks to showcase the work we’ve delivered, developing collaborations for our work moving forward in addition to defining focus for our end-of-life programme during years three to five.

Why was it important?

Palliative and end-of-life care is an under-researched area and requires greater attention. There are many unanswered questions to be addressed and, with limited resources, it is vital that we worked on end-of-life priority setting to bring direct and tangible benefits to local patients and their carers, families and friends.

How did we do it?

We gathered the views of local carers, patients and healthcare professionals to ensure that we adopted an inclusive approach. Carer and patient views were gathered through close working with local carer groups, and healthcare professional input was sought through a workshop in February 2016. This was supplemented by the development of a clinical advisory group made up of key healthcare professionals from our partner organisations.
