Making May Purple…. and OSCARSS!
We like hitting several birds with one stone here at OSCARSS HQ, so when our OSCARSS co-Chief Investigator, Emma Patchwood, signed up to be part of the University of Manchester ‘Purple Wave’ for the Manchester 10k recently, it was an opportunity to dedicate her run to the Stroke Association’s ‘Make May Purple’ campaign. Isn’t it great that University of Manchester and the Stroke Association both use purple branding? And, as luck would have it, Emma’s proclivity for purple wardrobe items meant that she could easily commit to the purple theme:
Emma said of the run: “It was my first ever 10k and my first ever time running in an organised event like this. Despite the heat, I really enjoyed it – the community spirit was fantastic! I was struggling a bit at the 7k mark but some kind soul saw my name on my running badge and cheered me on. It really helped spur me on and get me through; just shows the power of a caring word. I’m proud that I managed to do the whole run in 1 hour 11 mins - a slow steady pace but I didn’t walk once!”
Well done, Emma. And we echo the sentiment that caring words can be powerful; caring IS powerful. We hope that studies like OSCARSS will help support the POWERFUL work that carers do.
